Description
Pranlukast selectively antagonizes leukotriene D4 (LTD4) at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor in the human airway. It inhibits the actions of LTD4 at the CysLT1 receptor and prevents airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and enhanced secretion of thick, viscous mucus.

Pharmacology
Pranlukast selectively inhibits leukotriene D4 (LTD4) at the CysLT1 receptor, controlling asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms. It reduces airway edema, bronchospasm, and mucus secretion.
Mechanism of action
Reduces airway inflammation and constriction by blocking leukotriene D4 receptors.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- 2 tablets (225 mg) twice daily after breakfast and dinner
- Dosage may be adjusted according to age and symptoms
Pediatric Dose (Oral):
- 3.5 mg/kg twice daily
- Max dose: 10 mg/kg/day (not exceeding 450 mg daily)
Administration
- Take after breakfast and dinner
- Follow the prescribed dose
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; skip if it's almost time for next dose; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Headache
- Increased incidence of respiratory tract infection
- GI disturbances
- Fever, myalgia, arthralgia
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in renal impairment
- Possible elevations in liver enzymes
- Withdraw treatment in patients showing signs consistent with Churg-Strauss syndrome
- Do not use in acute asthma attacks
Contraindications
- Acute asthma attacks
- Hepatic impairment/cirrhosis
Drug interactions
- Concurrent use with warfarin and other anticoagulants may cause an increase in prothrombin time
Food interactions
It is not known whether it is safe to consume alcohol with Pranlukast Hydrate.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Not associated with increased risk of pregnancy loss, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, low birth weight, preterm delivery; slightly decreased birth weight may occur.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Information regarding use during breastfeeding is not available; consult your doctor.
Pediatric use
Substantial benefit seen in asthmatic children; consult your doctor.
Geriatric use
Caution required in elderly patients; consult your doctor.
Renal / hepatic impairment
