Description

Probiotics are live microorganisms that beneficially affect the host by improving intestinal microflora balance. Lactobacillus acidophilus naturally inhabits human intestines and vaginas, protecting against unhealthy organisms. Lactobacillus bulgaricus is used for yogurt production and helps lactose-intolerant individuals by breaking down lactose. Bifidobacterium bifidum is a normal inhabitant of the human colon.

Pharmacology

Probiotics counter gastrointestinal inflammation through effects on epithelial cell function, barrier function, and cytokine secretion. They reduce GI pH, provide direct antagonistic action on pathogens, and compete for binding sites. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum enhance granulocyte phagocytic activity and have antioxidant ability.
