Description
Sodium Fluoride is a cariostatic agent that provides fluoride ions to tooth enamel, converting hydroxyapatite to fluorapatite, which is more resistant to decay. It enhances enamel remineralization, reduces demineralization, and inhibits bacterial acid production.

Pharmacology
Sodium Fluoride provides fluoride ions to tooth enamel, converting hydroxyapatite to acid-resistant fluorapatite. It enhances enamel remineralization, inhibits bacterial acid production, and reduces the risk of dental decay.
Mechanism of action
Strengthens teeth by promoting enamel remineralization and preventing cavities.
Dosage
Adult and Child Dose (Oral Mouthwash):
- 5-10 mL once or twice daily
- Swish for 1 minute, then expectorate
- Use immediately after brushing/flossing teeth
- Avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing mouth for at least 30 minutes after use
Administration
- Swish in mouth and expectorate; do not swallow
- Use as directed
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember; if almost time for the next dose, skip it.
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Sialorrhea (increased salivation)
- Mouth/gum irritation
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea
- Headache, muscle tremor (if accidentally swallowed)
- Tooth discoloration (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- Not for systemic use; do not swallow
- Continuous ingestion may cause fluoride toxicity
- Caution in kidney disease, peptic ulcer disease, severe joint pain, or low-sodium diet
- Use with special care in children
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium fluoride
- Children under 3 years
- Drinking water fluoride content ≥0.3 ppm
Drug interactions
- Aluminum, calcium, and magnesium salts may reduce fluoride absorption

Overdose effects
Acute poisoning: Salty/soapy taste, increased salivation, GI disturbances, abdominal pain, weakness, drowsiness; severe: hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, hyperkalemia, tremors, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias; gastric lavage with lime water, calcium gluconate IV, consider hemodialysis.
