Description
Sulphacetamide Sodium is a sulfonamide antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthetase, preventing conversion of PABA to dihydrofolic acid. It interferes with nucleic acid synthesis, inhibiting bacterial growth and division.

Pharmacology
Sulphacetamide Sodium competitively binds to dihydropteroate synthetase, inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis. It interferes with nucleic acid synthesis, preventing bacterial growth and division.
Mechanism of action
Exhibits bacteriostatic action by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Ophthalmic):
- Ocular infections: Apply eye drops into the affected eye(s)
- May be used up to three times daily
Administration
- For ophthalmic use only
- Do not touch dropper tip to eye or any other surface
- Shake well before use
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; if almost time for the next dose, skip it; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Burning, stinging
- Conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers
- Irritation, conjunctival hyperemia
Serious (Rare):
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in history of allergy or asthma
- Caution in G6PD deficiency, renal and hepatic impairment
- Prolonged therapy requires CBC and urinalysis
- Maintain adequate fluid intake
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- Infants <2 months
Drug interactions
- PABA and procaine group of local anesthetics: Antagonistic action
- PABA in purulent eye exudates may competitively inhibit sulfacetamide action
Food interactions
Alcohol consumption is not relevant (topical application).

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Systemically administered sulfonamides can cause kernicterus in neonates; decide whether to discontinue nursing or the drug; consult your doctor.
