Tetracycline Hydrochloride 1% Eye Ointment is used for bacterial conjunctivitis and other ocular infections. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
Description
Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that reversibly binds to the 30S subunit of the ribosome, preventing protein synthesis and arresting cell growth. It is active against Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Rickettsia, and other bacteria.

Pharmacology
Tetracycline binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, blocking aminoacyl-tRNA attachment, inhibiting protein synthesis and arresting bacterial growth.
Mechanism of action
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
Dosage
Adult and Pediatric Dose (Ophthalmic):
- Apply a 1 cm strip to affected eye(s) every 2-4 hours
Administration
- For ophthalmic use only
- Wash hands before application
- Pull lower eyelid to form a pouch and apply ointment
- Close eyes for 1-2 minutes after application
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply at the next scheduled time.

- Avoid exposure to sunlight

Drug interactions
- Divalent/trivalent cations (Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Zn): Reduced absorption
- Penicillin: Interferes with bactericidal action
- Anticoagulants: Potentiated effect
- Oral contraceptives: Decreased efficacy
- Methoxyflurane: Fatal renal toxicity (potentially fatal)

Alcohol consumption is not relevant (topical application).
