Description
Xylometazoline is a direct-acting sympathomimetic which has a vasoconstrictor effect by reducing swelling and congestion when applied to mucous membranes.

Pharmacology
Xylometazoline is a direct-acting sympathomimetic which has a vasoconstrictor effect by reducing swelling and congestion when applied to mucous membranes.
Mechanism of action
Causes vasoconstriction in mucous membranes, reducing swelling and congestion.
Dosage
Child Dose (1-12 years) (Nasal Drop):
- 0.05%: 1 or 2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times daily
Child Dose (Nasal Spray):
- 1-2 sprays each nostril 3 times daily
- Not to be used in infants less than 3 months
Administration
- For nasal use only
- Clear the nose before use
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember; if almost time for next dose, skip it; do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Anxiety
- Dizzy
- Tremor
- Overuse may cause rebound congestion
- Topical products may cause local side effects such as nasal burning, stinging, dryness
Precautions & warnings
- The prolonged use or abuse of decongestants in general may lead to rebound congestion or drug induced rhinitis
- Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the preparation
- Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater
Drug interactions
- Increased heart rate or BP with sibutramine
- Hypertensive crisis with MAOIs (potentially fatal)
Food interactions
Food interactions are not significant.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Category C; should not be used during pregnancy.
Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Use only on the instructions of a doctor.
Pediatric use
Not to be used in infants less than 3 months

Overdose effects
Symptoms: Anxiety, dizzy, tremor.
Treatment: Supportive care.
Storage conditions
Protect from light. Do not use the bottle more than 28 days after opening it.
