Pharmacology

Zinc sulphate monohydrate is an essential trace element and is involved in a number of body enzyme systems. The body needs zinc for normal growth and health. Zinc is also vital for sexual maturation and reproduction, dark vision adaptation, olfactory and gustatory activity, insulin storage & release.

Mechanism of action

Acts as a cofactor in enzyme systems, plays a role in DNA synthesis, supports a healthy immune system, and helps maintain a sense of smell and taste.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Tablet: 40 mg Zinc 1-3 times daily
  • Syrup: 20 ml (4 teaspoonful) 1-3 times daily

Child Dose (Oral):

  • Tablet: 2-6 months: 10 mg Zinc once daily for 10-14 days; 6 months-5 years: 20 mg Zinc once daily for 10-14 days
  • Other indications: 2-2.5 mg/kg/day
  • Syrup: Under 10 kg: 5 ml twice daily; 10-30 kg: 10 ml 1-3 times daily; Over 30 kg: 20 ml 1-3 times daily
Administration
  • Take at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
  • If it causes stomach upset, may be taken with a meal
  • For dispersible tablet: Place the tablet in a teaspoon, add adequate water, let dissolve completely, give the entire spoonful solution
Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember; if almost time for next dose, skip it; do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings

  • Hypersensitivity to Zinc
Drug interactions
  • Tetracycline: decreased absorption of both tetracycline and zinc
  • Quinolone: decreased absorption of both
  • Penicillamine: decreased absorption of zinc

Use in Pregnancy: Safety not established in human pregnancy; zinc crosses the placenta and is present in breast milk.
