Nitazoxanide is an antiparasitic medication used for diarrhea and worm infections. It inhibits pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme to interfere with anaerobic metabolism of parasites.
Indications
- Diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum
- Diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia
- Diarrhea caused by Entamoeba histolytica
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Giardiasis/Cryptosporidiosis: 500 mg every 12 hours for 3 days
Pediatric Dose:
- 1-3 years: 100 mg (5 ml) every 12 hours for 3 days
- 4-11 years: 200 mg (10 ml) every 12 hours for 3 days
- 12 years+: 500 mg every 12 hours for 3 days
