Azelaic Acid 20% topical is a topical medication used in the treatment of acne (pimples). It effectively relieves symptoms such as lumps, redness and swelling associated with different forms of acne by killing the acne causing bacteria. Azelaic Acid 20% topical is for external use only. You should always use it exactly as your doctor has told you. The affected area should be clean and dry before application. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying this medicine. This medicine should be used regularly to get the most benefit from it. Do not use more than you need as it will not clear your condition faster and some side effects may be increased. If your condition goes on for longer than four weeks or gets worse at any time, let your doctor know. You can help this medicine work better by keeping the affected areas clean. Azelaic Acid 20% topical has a few potential side effects but not everyone will get them. These may include application site reactions like burning, irritation, itching, and redness. Serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare but let your doctor know if you're bothered by side effects or they do not go away. Make sure you read the instructions that come with your medicine. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact, you should rinse eyes thoroughly with water. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor before using this medicine as it may cause side effects that could be harmful to the developing baby. Azelaic acid works by killing the acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation (redness and swelling) of the skin.

• Acne

Azelaic acid is a naturally-occurring aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The exact mechanism of action in treatment of acne vulgaries has not been fully established. It is believed to inhibit the growth of susceptible organisms (mainly Propionibacteria Acnes) on the skin surface, and inhibits follicular keratinisation thus restricts the development of comedones. Mechanism of action in the treatment of rosacea is unknown.

Adult Dose: Topical Acne vulgaris Adult: As 20% cream: Apply into the affected areas bid (morning and evening). Improvement may be detectable w/n 4 wk. Duration of treatment: Up to 6 mth. Topical Rosacea Adult: Apply into the affected areas bid (morning and evening). Improvement occurs in 4-8 wk. Child Dose: Topical Acne vulgaris, Rosacea Child: >12 yr Same as adult dose. <12 years: Safety and efficacy not established

This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and apply the cream. Wash your hands after applying, unless hands are the affected area.

If you miss a dose of Azelaic Acid 20% topical, skip it and continue with your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.

In case of accidental contact, wash immediately with large amounts of cold water. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
