Brimonidine Tartrate Eye Prep is a sympathomimetic medication used in the treatment of ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. It lowers intraocular pressure by decreasing the production of aqueous humour and increasing uveoscleral outflow, reducing the risk of vision loss.
Indications
- Ocular hypertension
- Open-angle glaucoma
Dosage
Adults and children 2 years and older: Instill 1 drop of 0.2% or 0.15% solution in the affected eye(s) 2-3 times daily (BID-TID).
Children under 2 years: Safety and efficacy have not been established.
Note: Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute after instillation (to reduce systemic absorption). Use within 4 weeks of opening.
Side effects
Common side effects: Erythema (redness), foreign body sensation in eyes, blurred vision, dry mouth, dermatitis, burning sensation, ocular hyperemia, stinging sensation, flushing (sense of warmth in face, ears, neck, and trunk), eye itching, allergic reaction in eye.
Serious: Allergic conjunctivitis, corneal erosion (rare), bradycardia, hypotension (rare, especially in children).
Precautions & warnings
- May cause blurred or abnormal vision after use (especially at night or in reduced lighting); do not drive or operate machinery until vision is clear.
- Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute after instillation (to reduce systemic absorption and minimize drug transfer to breast milk).
- Use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
- Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
- Do not use in patients receiving MAO inhibitor therapy.
- Caution in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular insufficiency, Raynaud's disease, thromboangiitis obliterans.
