Dobutamine is a sympathomimetic agonist used for short-term treatment of heart failure and low blood pressure by increasing the pumping capacity of the heart.
Indications
- Heart failure (cardiac decompensation)
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypoperfusion states
Dosage
Adults and Children: Initially 0.5-1 mcg/kg/min IV continuous infusion, then 2-20 mcg/kg/min; max 40 mcg/kg/min. Adjust according to patient's BP, heart rate, cardiac and urine output.
Side effects
Common: High blood pressure, insomnia.
Other: Increased heart rate, ventricular ectopic activity, hypotension, infusion site reactions.
Precautions & warnings
May affect driving ability. Close monitoring of heart rate, rhythm, arterial blood pressure, and infusion rate is required. Caution in pregnancy and lactation.
