Lactated Ringer's Solution (Calcium Chloride + Potassium Chloride + Sodium Chloride + Sodium Lactate) is an isotonic electrolyte solution used as a fluid and electrolyte replenisher in hypovolemia caused by trauma, surgery, hemorrhage, and burns. It is also used in diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, diabetic coma, and cholera.

Dosage
Adults: Dosage depends on the patient's age, weight, and clinical condition. Recommended flow rate: up to 100 drops/min/70 kg body weight.
Burn patients (Parkland formula): 4 mL/kg body weight/% BSA burn (e.g., for a 60 kg person with 30% BSA burn: 4 x 60 x 30 = 7200 mL in 24 hours). Half within 8 hours, the remainder over 16 hours.
Note: Dose and infusion rate are determined by the physician based on the patient's clinical condition and laboratory findings.
Side effects
Infusion-related reactions: Febrile response, infection at the site of injection, venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of injection, extravasation, hypervolemia.
If an adverse reaction occurs, discontinue the infusion, evaluate the patient, institute appropriate therapeutic countermeasures, and save the remainder of the fluid for examination if deemed necessary.
Precautions & warnings
- Should not be administered rapidly or for prolonged periods.
- Infuse with caution in patients where electrolyte imbalance may cause detrimental effects (e.g., pregnancy, renal impairment, heart failure, pulmonary congestion, patients receiving potassium-sparing diuretics).
- Pressurizing flexible plastic containers to increase flow rates can result in air embolism if residual air is not fully evacuated prior to administration.
- Do not use vented IV administration sets with the vent in the open position (may cause air embolism).
- Clinical evaluation and periodic laboratory determinations are necessary to monitor fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base balance during prolonged parenteral therapy.
- Caution in patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin.
