Faropenem is a penem class antimicrobial with bactericidal activity against various gram-negative, gram-positive and anaerobic bacteria. It is used for lower respiratory tract infections, ENT infections, genito-urinary infections, skin infections, and gynecological infections.
Indications
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Acute bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary suppuration
- ENT Infections: Otitis externa, tympanitis, sinusitis
- Genito-urinary Infections: Pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis
- Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Pustular acne, folliculitis, impetigo, erysipelas, lymphangitis, subcutaneous abscess
- Gynecological Infections: Adnexitis, bartholin gland inflammation
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: 150 mg tid (may increase to 200 mg tid)
- ENT Infections: 200 mg tid (may increase to 300 mg tid)
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: 200 mg tid (may increase to 300 mg tid)
- Skin Infections: 150 mg tid (may increase to 200 mg tid)
- Genito-urinary Infections: 200 mg tid (may increase to 300 mg tid)
- Gynecological Infections: 150 mg tid (may increase to 200 mg tid)
Elderly: Start with 150 mg and monitor for adverse effects.

Common Side Effects:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Diarrhea
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Caution in patients with past history of hypersensitivity to penicillin, cephem or carbapenem drugs.
- Caution in patients with family history of atopy.
- Caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage should be reduced or interval between doses increased.
- Caution in geriatric patients; start with 150 mg and monitor.
- Caution in patients with poor oral intake or poor general state (vitamin K deficiency symptoms may occur).
- If diarrhea and loose bowel movements appear, stop the medicine, monitor, and take appropriate measures.
