Ibuprofen Gel is a topical NSAID used for muscle and joint pain, sprains, arthritis and sports injuries.

Pharmacology

Ibuprofen is a phenylpropionic acid derivative which exerts its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects directly in inflamed tissues underlying the site of application, mainly by inhibiting prostaglandin biosynthesis. It inhibits cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing local prostaglandins and thereby local pain and inflammation.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Topical):

  • Gently massage a small amount into affected area 3-4 times daily
  • Use 1-4 cm each time
  • Do not use more often than every 4 hours
  • Do not use for more than 2 weeks without medical advice

Child Dose: For patients over 14 years; safety and efficacy not established in children under 14 years

Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild redness at application site
  • Itching
  • Burning

Occasional: Unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, blisters or rash, itching, redness or bruising of skin, swelling of face

Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy: Avoid in the third trimester; use only on medical advice; Pregnancy Category C.

Pregnancy Category: C — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.

Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Caution if allergic to aspirin/NSAIDs or if asthmatic
  • Avoid heavy use over large areas
  • Apply with gentle massage only
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes and inflamed or broken skin
  • Discontinue if rash develops
  • Not for use with occlusive dressings
  • Caution in kidney problems or stomach ulcer
  • Avoid getting near eyes, lips, nostrils, genital areas; if accidental, wash with plenty of water
Overdose effects

Overdose with topical ibuprofen is unlikely; accidental oral ingestion may cause headache, vomiting, drowsiness, hypotension; correction of severe electrolyte abnormalities should be considered.

Storage conditions

Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place protected from light; keep away from fire; keep out of reach of children.
