Benzathine Penicillin is a long-acting penicillin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is effective in treating sore throat, syphilis, and preventing rheumatic fever.
Indications
- Group-A beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections
- Syphilis
- Prevention of rheumatic fever
- Acute otitis media
Dosage
Adult Dosage:
- Group-A beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections: 600,000 units as a single IM dose
- Prevention of rheumatic fever: 1.2 million units monthly IM injection
- Acute otitis media: 600,000 units as a single injection
- Early syphilis: 2.4 million units as a single dose
- Late syphilis: 2.4 million units weekly for 3 successive weeks
- Neurosyphilis: IV benzylpenicillin 2-4 million units every 4 hours for 10 days, followed by benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units weekly for 3 weeks
Pediatric Dosage:
- Newborns and infants: 50,000 units/kg as a single dose
- Children >60 lb: 900,000 units as a single dose

- Injection site pain, swelling, redness
- Rash
- Allergic reactions
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
Precautions & warnings
- Inform your doctor if allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics
- Complete the full course - do not stop even if you feel better
- Stop and inform your doctor immediately if you develop allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/throat/tongue, breathing difficulties)
- Ischaemic reactions may occur at injection site
