Indications
- Tetanus prophylaxis (post-injury in patients with incomplete or uncertain immunization)
- Therapeutic treatment of tetanus
Dosage
Adult Dose (IM):
- Post-exposure prophylaxis: 250 IU single dose
- High-risk cases (infected wounds, deep/contaminated wounds, burns, tissue necrosis): 500 IU
- Extensive burns: Second 250 IU dose after 36 hours
- Tetanus treatment: 3,000-6,000 IU (with other clinical procedures)
Pediatric Dose (IM):
- Post-exposure prophylaxis: 250 IU single dose
- High-risk cases: 500 IU
- Tetanus treatment: 3,000-6,000 IU
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Injection site reactions (pain, tenderness)
- Fever
- Angioneurotic edema
- Nephritic syndrome
- Anaphylactic shock (rare)
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in coagulation disorders or thrombocytopenia
- Not for IV administration
- Caution in pregnancy and lactation
- Caution in patients with IgA deficiency and antibodies to IgA
