Poly (O-2-hydroxyethyl) starch 100g + Sodium Chloride is a colloidal solution volume expander used for prophylaxis of hypovolemia and shock, surgery (hemorrhagic shock), injuries (traumatic shock), burns, and therapeutic dilution of blood.
Indications
- Prophylaxis of hypovolemia and shock
- Surgery (hemorrhagic shock)
- Injuries (traumatic shock)
- Burns
- Therapeutic dilution of blood
Pharmacology
The colloidal solution containing hydroxyethyl starch restores plasma volume by increasing intravascular oncotic pressure. The 100g/100mL formulation provides higher oncotic pressure compared to the 60g formulation. Sodium chloride maintains electrolyte balance.
Dosage
Adult Dose (IV):
- Up to 50 mL/kg body weight per day (equivalent to 3 g hydroxyethyl starch and 7.7 mEq sodium/kg)
- Up to 3500 mL for a 70 kg patient
Pediatric Dose (IV):
- Newborns & <2 years: Mean dose 16 mL/kg
- 2-12 years: Mean dose 36 mL/kg
- Give initial 10-20 mL by slow IV infusion and monitor for anaphylactoid reaction
Side effects
Side Effects (<10%):
- Immune system disorders (rare): Anaphylactoid reactions (mild influenza-like symptoms, bradycardia, tachycardia, bronchospasm, non-cardiac pulmonary edema)
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (common, dose-dependent): Prolonged administration of high doses may cause pruritus (itching)

Precautions & warnings
- Anaphylactoid reactions may occur; if hypersensitivity occurs, discontinue immediately
- Regularly assess fluid status and infusion rate (especially in cardiac insufficiency or severe kidney dysfunction)
- Caution in severe liver disease or severe bleeding disorders
- Contraindicated in renal failure with oliguria or anuria
Overdose effects
Overdose may cause fluid overload, pulmonary edema, heart failure; treatment: stop infusion, diuretics, symptomatic supportive care.

Store in a cool and dry place; keep out of reach of children.
