  • Schizophrenia
  • Depressive disorders
Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Schizophrenia: Start 50-100 mg three times daily; increase by 100 mg weekly; usual dose 200-800 mg/day in 2-4 divided doses; max 800 mg/day
  • Depressive disorders: Start 25 mg three times daily; titrate to 20-200 mg/day

Pediatric Dose (Oral):

  • 2-12 years: 0.5 mg/kg/day (divided); increase gradually; max 3 mg/kg/day
  • >12 years: Start 50-100 mg every 8 hours; titrate to 200-800 mg/day
Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Somnolence, dry mouth
  • Abnormal voluntary movements
  • Weight gain, increased prolactin
  • Urinary retention, constipation
  • Muscle rigidity, tremor
Precautions & warnings
  • Risk of QT prolongation; ECG monitoring required
  • Do not use in uncorrected hypokalemia or electrolyte imbalance
  • Dizziness on standing; change positions slowly
  • May affect driving ability (somnolence, dizziness)
  • Regular eye examinations and blood tests required
