Mesalazine is an anti-inflammatory medicine used for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It reduces inflammation by blocking the production of inflammatory chemical mediators in the intestines.
Indications
- Mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis - treatment and maintenance of remission
- Crohn's disease - maintenance of remission
Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Ulcerative colitis (active): Up to 4 g/day in 2-4 divided doses, 6 weeks
- Ulcerative colitis (maintenance): 2 g/day in divided doses
- Crohn's disease (maintenance): 1.2-2.4 g/day in divided doses
Children (5-12 years): Active: 15-20 mg/kg (max 1 g) 3 times daily; Maintenance: 10 mg/kg (max 500 mg) 2-3 times daily

Common Side Effects:
- Headache
- Nausea, vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Pruritus
- Hair loss
- Asthenia, dyspepsia
Precautions & warnings
- Pyloric stenosis may cause delayed gastric retention
- Caution in renal dysfunction (nephropathy, interstitial nephritis)
- Caution in liver disease (hepatic failure reported)
