Metoclopramide Hydrochloride is a prokinetic drug used to treat nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and stomach discomfort.

Indications
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion and heartburn
  • Diabetic gastroparesis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting
Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Diabetic Gastric Stasis: 10 mg 4 times daily (2-8 weeks)
  • Chemotherapy-induced Nausea: 10 mg (up to 3 times daily, max 5 days)
  • GERD: 10-15 mg 4 times daily (max 12 weeks)
  • Elderly: 5 mg/dose

Parenteral Dose: 10 mg IM or slow IV (1-2 minutes)

Child Dose: 0.1-0.2 mg/kg IV/IM/PO (6-8 hourly)

Renal Dose: CrCl <40 mL/min: reduce dose by 50%; CrCl <10 mL/min: reduce dose by 75%

Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Restlessness
  • Drowsiness and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dysgeusia (taste changes)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Tardive Dyskinesia (uncontrolled movements)
  • Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)
  • Depression and suicidal ideation
Precautions & warnings
  • Caution while driving (may cause drowsiness and dizziness)
  • Avoid alcohol (may cause excessive drowsiness)
  • Avoid in patients with Parkinson's Disease
  • Caution in epilepsy (may increase seizure frequency)
  • Do not use if history of tardive dyskinesia
