Sodium Chloride is a saline solution used for dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, nasal dryness, wound cleansing, and medication dilution. It restores the body's salt and electrolyte levels.
Indications
- Dry nasal membranes (from cold and allergy medications)
- Dry nose from dry climates or airplane travel
- Wound cleansing (body parts and medical equipment)
- Diluent for other medications
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Fluid replacement in gastroenteritis
- Priming fluid for hemodialysis
- Phlegm thinning in bronchiolitis, asthma, COPD (nebulizer)
- Reducing corneal swelling (ophthalmic)
Dosage
Nasal Drop (Nasal Congestion):
- Infants, children & adults: 2 drops in each nostril, 1-4 times daily
Nasal Spray:
- Newborn to 12 months: 1 spray into each nostril 2-3 times daily
- >12 months & adults: 1-2 sprays into each nostril 2-3 times daily
Intravenous (Adult):
- Usually 1000 ml of 0.9% solution (depends on age, weight, clinical condition)
Nebulizer:
- 4 ml nebulized for 20 minutes, 4 times daily (all ages)
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Nasal: Stinging, sneezing, increased nasal discharge, salty taste (occasional)
- Intravenous: Fever, injection site infection, venous thrombosis, phlebitis, extravasation, hypervolemia
- Ophthalmic: Temporary blurred vision, burning/irritation
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in heart disease (CHF), lung problems (pulmonary edema), kidney disease
- Caution in hypokalemia and hypernatremia
- Avoid excessive administration (may cause hypokalemia)
- Do not use IV solution if cloudy or contains particles
