Oxybuprocaine Hydrochloride 0.4% Eye prep is a local anaesthetic used to temporarily numb the front surface of the eye for tonometry or foreign body removal.

Indications
  • Local ocular anaesthesia
  • Tonometry (eye pressure measurement)
  • Contact lens fitting
  • Foreign body removal from corneal epithelium
  • Incision of meibomian cyst
Dosage

Adult Dose (Eye Drops):

  • Tonometry: 1 drop in conjunctival sac, after 60 seconds
  • Contact lens fitting: 1 drop, another drop after 90 seconds
  • Foreign body removal/cyst incision: 3 drops at 90-second intervals, sufficient anaesthesia after 5 minutes
Side effects

Side Effects:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Transient stinging and blurring of vision
  • CNS excitation
  • Muscle twitching and tremors
  • Convulsions
Precautions & warnings
  • Caution in heart block, epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, myasthenia gravis
  • Do not apply to inflamed, infected tissues or damaged mucosa
  • Protect anaesthetised eye from dust and bacterial contamination
  • Cornea may be damaged by prolonged application
  • Do not drive until normal vision restored
