Description

Paracetamol IV helps in relieving moderate pain and reducing fever. It effectively alleviates pain and reduces fever for the short-term in cases following surgery or in cases where oral administration is not possible. Paracetamol IV is administered as an injection by a healthcare professional and should not be self administered. Depending on the severity of your underlying illness, your doctor will decide the precise dose and schedule as per which this injection is to be given. It starts working within one hour. Inform your doctor if you are also taking other medications containing paracetamol to avoid overdose. Please consult your doctor in case your pain or fever does not subside. Vomiting, difficulty sleeping and constipation may be seen as side effects in some patients. Please consult your doctor of these side effects do not get better or persist for a longer duration of time. Inform your doctor immediately if any rash or allergic reaction is observed while taking this medicine. Pregnant and nursing women should use it under medical supervision only. It should be used with caution in patients with liver and kidney disease or alcohol abuse. It is not recommended in patients with severe or active liver disease. Paracetamol IV is an analgesic (pain reliever) and anti-pyretic (fever reducer). It works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause pain and fever.

Mechanism of action

Paracetamol exhibits analgesic action by peripheral blockage of pain impulse generation. It produces antipyresis by inhibiting the hypothalamic heat-regulating centre. Its weak anti-inflammatory activity is related to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Intravenous Mild to moderate pain and fever Adult >50 kg: 1g up to 4 times a day. Max: 4 g daily. Admin by infusion over 15 min. Adult 33 to 50 kg: 15 mg/kg body wt, up to 4 times a day. Max: 60 mg/kg (up to 3 g) daily Child Dose: Intravenous Mild to moderate pain and fever Child >12 years, >50 kg: 1g up to 4 times a day. Max: 4 g daily. Admin by infusion over 15 min. Child 2-12 years: upto 33kg: 15 mg/kg body wt, up to 4 times a day. Max: 75 mg/kg daily. Children: <10 kg: 7.5 mg/kg body wt, up to 4 times a day.

Precautions & warnings

[SAFE] Paracetamol IV does not usually affect your ability to drive. Sumo L IV Infusion helps in relieving moderate pain and fever for a short-term, especially following surgery. Inform your doctor if you are also taking other medications containing paracetamol. Inform your doctor if you suffer from a liver disease, severe kidney disease or from alcohol abuse. Inform your doctor if you experience symptoms such as feeling or being sick, weight loss, pale skin (pallor) or abdominal pain within the first 24 hours as it indicates an overdose. Your doctor may regularly monitor your kidney function, liver function and levels of blood components if you are taking this medicine for long-term treatment.

Contraindications

Paracetamol is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment and hepatic disease (Viral Hepatitis). Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol.

Drug interactions

Hepatotoxic drugs, liver microsomal enzyme inducers. Metoclopramide. Probenecid. Colestyramine (w/in 1 hr of paracetamol administration).

Food interactions

[UNSAFE] It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Paracetamol IV.

Use in pregnancy

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Paracetamol IV is safe to use during pregnancy. Most studies have shown low or no risk to the developing baby.

Use in lactation

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Paracetamol IV is safe to use during breastfeeding. Human studies suggest that the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in a significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.

Renal / hepatic impairment

[CAUTION] Paracetamol IV should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Paracetamol IV may be needed. Please consult your doctor. However, Paracetamol IV contains paracetamol which is considered the safest painkiller for kidney disease patients. [CAUTION] Paracetamol IV should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Paracetamol IV may be needed. Please consult your doctor. However, the use of Paracetamol IV is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease and active liver disease.
