Permethrin is a topical scabicidal agent used for the treatment of scabies and crab lice infestations (Pediculosis). It acts on the nerve cell membrane to disrupt the sodium channel current, resulting in paralysis of the pests.
Indications
- Scabies
- Crab lice infestations (Pediculosis)
Dosage
Adult Dose (Topical):
- Adults and children over 12 years: 1 full tube
- Children aged 6-12 years: up to ½ tube
- Children aged 1-5 years: up to ¼ tube
- Children aged 2 months to 1 year: up to ⅛ tube
- Children less than 2 months: Dose not established
Side effects
Side Effects:
- Skin discomfort (burning, stinging, or tingling)
- Erythema
- Edema
- Eczema
- Rash
- Pruritus
Precautions & warnings
- Scabies infestation is often accompanied by pruritus, edema, and erythema; treatment may temporarily exacerbate these conditions
- Avoid contact with eyes; if the cream gets in the eyes, flush with water immediately
- Use in pregnancy only under medical advice
- Should not be used in nursing mothers
