Lactic Acid + Citric Acid + Potassium Bitartrate is a vaginal gel used for the prevention of pregnancy in women of reproductive potential as an on-demand method of contraception. It works by lowering vaginal pH and reducing sperm motility.
Indications
- Prevention of pregnancy in women of reproductive potential - on-demand contraceptive method
Pharmacology
Acts as a contraceptive by lowering vaginal pH and reducing sperm motility. In vitro studies showed that the pH-lowering effect and sperm motility reduction contribute to the activity of this gel in the vagina.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Vaginal Application):
- Administer 5 g gel vaginally immediately before (or up to one hour before) each episode of vaginal intercourse
- May use during any part of the menstrual cycle
- Apply using the provided applicator
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Vulvovaginal burning sensation
- Vulvovaginal pruritus
- Vulvovaginal mycotic infection
- Urinary tract infection
- Vulvovaginal discomfort
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Vaginal discharge
- Genital discomfort
- Dysuria
- Vulvovaginal pain
Use in pregnancy
There is no use for this gel in pregnancy (used as a contraceptive).
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid use in women with a history of recurrent UTI or urinary tract abnormalities (cystitis and pyelonephritis risk)
- Avoid use with vaginal rings
- Seek emergency medical attention in case of overdose
