Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain and inflammation relief. It is effective in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout and juvenile arthritis.
Indications
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis

Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- Pain: 500 mg initially, then 250 mg q6-8hr or 500 mg q12hr; max 1250 mg/day (day 1), subsequent 1000 mg/day
- OA/RA/AS: 500-1000 mg/day divided q12hr; may increase to 1500 mg/day
- Dysmenorrhea: 500 mg initially, then 250 mg q6-8hr
- Gout: 750 mg initially, then 250 mg q8hr
Pediatric Dose (>2 years): JIA: 10 mg/kg/day divided q12hr; max 15 mg/kg/day
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Pruritus, purpura
- Edema, palpitation
- Visual and hearing disturbances
Precautions & warnings
- Risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding
- Risk of kidney problems (with long-term use)
- Caution if history of heart disease or stroke
- May cause dizziness, drowsiness or visual disturbances; caution while driving
- Avoid alcohol
- Do not use in third trimester of pregnancy
