At a glance
Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate is used in the treatment of autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Indications
- Acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Malaria
Pharmacology
Hydroxychloroquine is a 4-aminoquinoline antimalarial with actions similar to those of chloroquine but is mainly used in the treatment of SLE and rheumatoid arthritis. It acts as an immunosuppressant by inhibiting production of rheumatoid and acute phase reactants. It accumulates in white blood cells, stabilizing lysosomal membranes and inhibiting the activity of many enzymes, including collagenase and the proteases that cause cartilage breakdown. It also acts by disrupting cell walls of infected red blood cells and kills the developing parasites.
