Description

Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride is an antihistamine used to treat symptoms of skin allergy like itching, swelling, and rashes. It is also used to treat anxiety and helps to get relaxed before or after surgery. Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride should be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time every day to get the most benefit. It should be taken as your doctor's advice. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you. In case, you have missed any doses than it is better to take the next dose as soon as you remember it. However, you should never take a double dose. The most common side effects of this medicine include sedation, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and constipation. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. You must avoid driving or attention-seeking activity while on treatment. Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you have heart problems or have high blood pressure, have liver or kidney problems. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Generally, it is advised to avoid alcohol while on treatment. Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride is an antihistaminic medication. In allergy, it works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger (histamine). This relieves allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling, and rashes. In short-term anxiety, it works by decreasing the activity in brain, thereby helping you feel relaxed/sleepy.

Mechanism of action

Hydroxyzine, a piperazine derivative, blocks histamine H1-receptors on effector cells of the GI tract, blood vessels and resp tract. It is a sedating antihistamine w/ antimuscarinic and significant sedative properties. It also possesses skeletal muscle relaxing, bronchodilator, antiemetic and analgesic properties.

Dosage

Adult Dose: Oral For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested: Adult: 50-100 mg 4 times daily. For use in the management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses, and in histamine-mediated pruritus: Adult: Initially, 25 mg at night increased if required up to 25 mg 3-4 times daily. As a sedative when used as a premedication and following general anesthesia: Adult: 50-100 mg. Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%. Child Dose: Oral For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested Children under 6 years: 50 mg daily in divided doses >6 years: 50 to 100 mg daily in divided doses. For use in the management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses, and in histamine-mediated pruritus Child: 6 mth to 6 yr Initially, 5-15 mg/day, increased to 50 mg/day in divided doses; >6 yr Initially, 15-25 mg/day, increased up to 50-100 mg/day in divided doses. As a sedative when used as a premedication and following general anesthesia Child: 0.6 mg/kg. Hepatic impairment: Reduce total daily dose by 33%. For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested,children under 6 years, 50 mg daily in divided doses and over 6 years, 50 to 100 mg daily in divided doses. For use in the management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses, and in histamine-mediated pruritus, children under 6 years, 50 mg daily in divided doses and over 6 years, 50 to 100 mg daily in divided doses. As a sedative when used as a premedication and following general anesthesia, 0.6 mg/kg in children. Renal Dose: Renal Impairment >50 mL/min: Dose adjustment not necessary <50 mL/min: Administer 50% normal dose

Administration

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings

[UNSAFE] Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. You have been prescribed Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride to treat allergy symptoms such as such as itching, swelling, and rashes or relieve/treat mild anxiety. May decrease your alertness. Avoid driving or using machinery if this happens to you. Avoid drinking alcohol when taking the Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride, as it may cause excessive sleepiness or drowsiness. Inform your doctor if you have a heart disease as Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may increase the risk of heart problems. Inform your doctor if you have ever been diagnosed with kidney or liver problems.

Contraindications

Porphyria, neonates, pregnancy, lactation.

Drug interactions

Additive or may potentiate CNS depressant effects of opiates or other analgesics, barbiturates or other sedatives, and anaesth. MAOIs and TCAs potentiate antimuscarinic effects.

Food interactions

[UNSAFE] Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.

Use in pregnancy

Renal / hepatic impairment

[CAUTION] Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
