• Improvement of glycemic control in patients 1 year of age and older with diabetes mellitus

Adult Dose (Subcutaneous):

• Type 2 Diabetes (insulin-naïve): 10 units SC once daily
• Type 1 Diabetes: One third to one half of total daily insulin dose; 0.2-0.4 units/kg (for insulin-naïve patients)
• Conversion from other insulins: Same unit dose and injection schedule; for premix or self-mix insulin
• Dose adjustments: Based on fasting plasma glucose measurements; 3-4 days between increases

Child Dose: Safety and efficacy not established

Side Effects:

• Hypoglycemia
• Allergic reactions
• Injection site reactions
• Lipodystrophy
• Pruritus
• Rash
• Edema
• Weight gain

Precautions:

• Hypoglycemia: Omission of meal or unplanned strenuous exercise may lead to hypoglycemia
• Hyperglycemia: Inadequate dosing and/or discontinuation of treatment may lead to hyperglycemia and potentially diabetic ketoacidosis
• Eye disorder: Intensification of insulin therapy with abrupt improvement may be associated with temporary worsening of diabetic retinopathy
• Avoidance of accidental mix-ups: Always check insulin label before each injection
• Ability to drive may be affected if blood sugar is too low or too high
• Rotate injection sites to prevent hard lumps
• Hypoglycemia may occur when taken with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol or on skipping a meal
