Dipyridamole is an antiplatelet medication used for stroke prevention and prevention of blood clotting after heart valve replacement.
Indications
- Secondary prevention of ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attacks
- Prophylaxis of thromboembolism associated with prosthetic heart valves
Dosage
Adult: 75-100 mg every 6 hours (as adjunct to warfarin).
Child: 3-6 mg/kg/day divided every 6-8 hours.
Side effects
Common: Headache, flushing, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, decreased blood pressure.
Other: Thrombocytopenia, angioedema, angina pectoris, tachycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm, rash, urticaria, myalgia, post-procedural hemorrhage.
Precautions & warnings
May affect driving ability (drowsiness, dizziness). Increased bleeding risk; be careful while shaving, cutting nails, or using sharp objects. May need to temporarily stop before surgery or dental treatment. Caution in pregnancy and lactation.
