Salbutamol is a fast-acting bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and COPD such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. It relaxes airway muscles, making breathing easier.
Indications
- Asthma
- Chronic bronchitis
- Emphysema
- Other conditions associated with airway obstruction
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Oral: 2-4 mg 3-4 times daily (max 8 mg 3-4 times)
- Inhalation (MDI): Acute bronchospasm – 1-2 inhalations as needed; Maintenance – 2 inhalations 3-4 times daily; max 800 mcg/day
- Nebulizer: 2.5-5 mg up to 4 times daily
- Parenteral (IM/SC): 500 mcg (repeat every 4 hours)
- IV: 250 mcg slowly (repeat if needed); infusion 3-20 mcg/min
Pediatric Dose:
- Oral (2-6 years): 1-2 mg; (6-12 years): 2 mg; (>12 years): 2-4 mg 3-4 times daily
- Inhalation (4-12 years): 1 inhalation (up to 2 if needed); max 400 mcg/day
- Nebulizer (>4 years): 2.5-5 mg up to 4 times daily
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Headache
- Muscle tremor (especially hands)
- Muscle cramps
- Palpitations
- Tachycardia
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, aneurysms
- High doses may cause hypokalemia (digitalis toxicity risk)
- Caution in diabetes mellitus
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
