Betamethasone + Neomycin Sulphate E/E prep

Betamethasone 0.1% + Neomycin Sulphate 0.5% E/E prep is a combination of two medicines: Betamethasone (a corticosteroid) and Neomycin Sulphate (an antibiotic). Betamethasone is a steroid which blocks the production of certain chemical messengers that make the eye/ear red, swollen and itchy. Neomycin is an antibiotic that stops bacterial growth in the eye/ear by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria.

Eye drops: 1 drop every 1-2 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced. Ear drops: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours until control is achieved. Nose drops: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily. Eye ointment: Applied thinly to the conjunctival sac at night or 3-4 times daily if used alone.

Betamethasone is a corticosteroid which is effective in inflammatory conditions. Neomycin sulfate is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is bactericidal against many bacteria.

Betamethasone controls inflammation by controlling the rate of protein synthesis, depressing the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and fibroblasts, and reversing capillary permeability and lysosomal stabilisation. Neomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis.

Betamethasone reduces inflammation and itching, while Neomycin stops bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. Together, they provide effective treatment for bacterial eye and ear infections.

Eye Drops: 1 drop every 1-2 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced.

Ear Drops: 2-3 drops every 2-3 hours until control is achieved, then frequency may be reduced.

Nose Drops: 2-3 drops in each nostril 2-3 times daily.

Eye Ointment: Apply thinly and evenly to the conjunctival sac at night (if eye drops used during day) or 3-4 times daily (if ointment used alone).

For external use only. Use in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye/ear without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid or ear. Wipe off extra liquid. Do not touch the dropper tip.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

• Do not use in viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent eye conditions
• Do not use if glaucoma or herpetic keratitis is present
• Do not use with perforated eardrum (risk of ototoxicity)
• Do not use for longer than prescribed (may cause secondary infections)
• Do not touch the dropper tip (to avoid contamination)
• Use within 4 weeks after opening
• Caution during pregnancy and lactation

• Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent eye conditions
• Glaucoma
• Herpetic keratitis (dendritic ulcer)
• Perforated eardrum
• Hypersensitivity to betamethasone, neomycin, or any component

• Neuromuscular blockers: Neomycin sulfate may increase respiratory depressant effects if significant systemic absorption occurs

No food-related restrictions (topical application).

[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby.

Use as directed by a physician for children.

No dose adjustment needed for elderly patients, but caution is advised.

Systemic absorption with topical application is minimal, but caution is advised in severe renal or hepatic impairment.

Overuse may cause local irritation or systemic absorption. Consult a doctor if symptoms occur.

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
