Pharmacology

Calcium gluconate/lactate is used to treat calcium deficiency. It acts as a bone mineral component and facilitates nerve and muscle function and normal cardiac function. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation. Calcium and vitamin D have synergistic effects on bone growth, osteoporosis, and fracture prevention.

Calcium supports bone mineralization and nerve/muscle function. Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption and stimulates bone formation, helping prevent osteoporosis and fractures.

Dosage

Adults and Elderly: 2 tablets per day, preferably one tablet each morning and evening.

Children above 12 years: 2 tablets per day, one tablet each morning and evening.

Children under 12 years: Not recommended.

Note: Patients with mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria should be carefully supervised.

Administration

Take one tablet each morning and evening with or without food. Follow the dose and duration as advised by your physician.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose.

Side effects

Common side effects: Mild and transient gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, diarrhea may occur in some individuals.

Vitamin D supplements may cause skin rash in some rare cases.

Hypercalciuria has been seen with long-term use at high dosage.

Precautions & warnings
  • Patients with mild to moderate renal failure or mild hypercalciuria should be supervised carefully.
  • Periodic checks of plasma calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion should be made.
  • In patients with a history of renal stones, urinary calcium excretion should be measured to exclude hypercalciuria.
  • With long-term treatment, monitor serum and urinary calcium levels and kidney function; reduce or stop treatment temporarily if urinary calcium exceeds 7.5 mmol/24 hours.
Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
  • Severe hypercalcemia
  • Severe hypercalciuria
Drug interactions
  • Tetracyclines: May affect absorption when used together.
  • Systemic corticosteroids: May reduce calcium absorption.
  • Thiazide diuretics: May decrease urinary excretion of calcium.
  • Ion-exchange resins: May reduce GI absorption of vitamin D.
  • Cardiac glycosides: Hypercalcemia may increase toxicity; monitor ECG and serum calcium levels.
  • Bisphosphonates or sodium fluoride: Should be given at least 3 hours before calcium-containing preparations.
Food interactions

Oxalic acid (spinach, rhubarb) and phytic acid (grains) may reduce calcium absorption; calcium supplements should not be taken with meals containing high concentrations of these substances.

Use in pregnancy

Safe during pregnancy (if prescribed by a physician). Avoid excessive doses.

Use in lactation

Safe during lactation (if prescribed by a physician).

Pediatric use

Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Geriatric use

Safe for elderly; particularly beneficial for osteoporosis prevention.

Renal / hepatic impairment
Renal impairment: Caution in mild to moderate renal failure; regular monitoring of serum and urinary calcium is recommended.

Hepatic impairment: No special precautions required, but consult your physician.
Overdose effects

Overdose symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, constipation, diarrhea, weakness, headache, dizziness. Severe cases may cause hypercalcemia.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
