Description

Carbonyl Iron + Folic Acid + Zinc Sulfate is a timed-release capsule which is a combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate. It contains Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content. Carbonyl Iron, having high bioavailability and low toxicity is safer and more effective choice for iron supplementation. This combination capsule is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency especially during pregnancy and lactation.

Pharmacology

This timed-release capsule is the combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate. It contains Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content. Carbonyl Iron, having high bioavailability and low toxicity is safer and more effective choice for iron supplementation.

Mechanism of action

Carbonyl Iron provides highly bioavailable iron for hemoglobin production; Folic Acid aids in red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis; Zinc Sulfate supports immune function and cell division.

Dosage

Adult: One capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician.

Administration

Take before food or as advised by your doctor. Swallow the capsule whole, do not chew.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Precautions & warnings
  • Special care should be taken in patients with Iron overload states, such as haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia or red blood cell aplasia.
  • Failure to respond to the treatment requires further investigations to exclude other causes of anaemia.
  • In patients with renal failure there may be the risk of Zinc accumulation.
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to any of its components
  • Iron overload states
Drug interactions

Carbonyl Iron: Decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa and penicillamine.

Folic Acid: Interacts with antiepileptics; plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone may be reduced.

Food interactions

Take before food. No specific food interactions have been identified.

Use in pregnancy

Use of any drug during first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible. Administration of Iron during the first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency. Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency where inadequate diet calls for supplementary Zinc and Folic acid is justified during the remainder of pregnancy.

Use in lactation

This capsule can be used during lactation for the treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency.

Pediatric use

Safety and effectiveness in pediatric populations have not been established.

Geriatric use

No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients. However, caution should be exercised.

Renal / hepatic impairment

In patients with renal failure there may be the risk of Zinc accumulation.

Overdose effects

Symptoms of Carbonyl Iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak and rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.

Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
