At a glance
Chlorhexidine Gluconate is an antiseptic used for disinfecting hands of doctors, nurses and personnel, disinfecting surgical instruments, disinfecting skin prior to surgery, and disinfecting wound dressings.
Description
Chlorhexidine Gluconate is a rapid acting wide spectrum microbicidal preparation used to disinfect clean hands of doctors, nurses and personnel prior to surgical procedures or after handling contaminated materials. It is also used to disinfect surgical instruments, disinfect skin prior to surgery or other invasive procedures, and disinfect wound dressings. At physiologic pH, chlorhexidine salts dissociate and release the positively charged chlorhexidine cation. The bactericidal effect is a result of the binding of this cationic molecule to negatively charged bacterial cell walls.
Indications
- Hand disinfection (Doctors, Nurses & Personnel)
- Surgical instrument disinfection
- Pre-surgical skin disinfection
- Wound dressing disinfection
- Cleaning contaminated materials
Therapeutic class
Antiseptics & Disinfectants
Pharmacological class
Antiseptic (Biguanide)
Pharmacology
Chlorhexidine Gluconate is a broad-spectrum microbicidal agent. At physiologic pH, chlorhexidine salts dissociate and release the positively charged chlorhexidine cation. The bactericidal effect is a result of the binding of this cationic molecule to negatively charged bacterial cell walls. At low concentrations, it exhibits a bacteriostatic effect; at high concentrations, membrane disruption results in cell death.
Mechanism of action
Chlorhexidine, as a positively charged cation, binds to negatively charged bacterial cell walls, which at low concentrations inhibits bacterial growth and at high concentrations causes cell death.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- Hand disinfection: Take approximately 3 ml and scrub the entire surface of both hands until dry.
- Surgical instrument disinfection: Place approximately 5 ml in a clean pot and immerse instruments for 2 minutes.
- Skin disinfection (pre-surgery): Apply approximately 3 ml to the skin using cotton and scrub until dry.
- Wound/wound dressing disinfection: Apply approximately 3 ml to cotton and scrub on the wound until dry.
Administration
It is most commonly administered topically, applied directly to the skin or mucous membranes. The specific administration method will vary depending on the product formulation and intended use.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Chlorhexidine Gluconate, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Skin irritation
- Allergic reactions
- Tooth discoloration (with oral use)
- Eye problems (with direct contact)
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid contact with brain, meninges, middle ear or sensitive tissues and eyes.
- Do not inject or use in body cavities.
- Incompatible with soaps and other anionic agents.
- Safe during pregnancy. Safety in lactation is unknown.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Chlorhexidine Gluconate or any component of it.
Drug interactions
Chlorhexidine is incompatible with soaps and other anionic agents. Hypochlorite bleaches may cause brown stains to develop in fabrics which have previously been in contact with chlorhexidine solutions.
Food interactions
No food interactions found or established.
Use in pregnancy
Safe for use during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
It is not known whether Chlorhexidine Gluconate is safe during lactation.
Pediatric use
The dosage for children is typically determined by their age. Younger children may need fewer doses than older children.
Geriatric use
Limited information is available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment
Topical chlorhexidine gluconate use is unlikely to have a significant impact on the renal dose required by people with renal impairment.
Overdose effects
Information on overdosage is not available. Consult a physician if overdose is suspected.
Storage conditions
Keep away from eye, head and meninges & middle ear. Store in a cool and dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
