Description
Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride + Nystatin is an antifungal cream used for the treatment of fungal and bacterial skin infections. It is effective in treating ringworm, athlete's foot, and infected nappy rash. Nystatin is a polyene antifungal that binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, affecting cell wall permeability and allowing leakage of cellular contents. Chlorhexidine has activity against a wide range of bacteria. This medicine is for external use only and should be applied to the affected area of the skin.

Pharmacology
Nystatin is a fungistatic and fungicidal antibiotic primarily effective against Candida albicans. Chlorhexidine has activity against a wide range of bacteria. Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is not absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes when applied topically.
Mechanism of action
Nystatin, a polyene antifungal, binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane. This binding affects the cell wall permeability allowing leakage of cellular contents. Chlorhexidine kills bacteria by destroying the bacterial cell wall.
Dosage
Adult Dose: Apply 2-3 times a day, continuing for 7 days after lesions have healed, or as directed by the physician.
Child Dose: Apply 2-3 times a day, continuing for 7 days after lesions have healed, or as directed by the physician.
Administration
This medicine is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Clean and dry the affected area and gently massage the cream.

Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Allergic skin reactions (dermatitis, pruritus, erythema, eczema, rash, skin irritation)
- Application site burning, itching and redness
Rare Side Effects: Severe allergic reactions (drop in blood pressure, unconsciousness).
Precautions & warnings
- For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes.
- If sensitivity occurs, or if new infection appears, discontinue use and institute alternative therapy.
- If gets in eyes, mouth or nose, rinse with cold water.
- Do not cover the area being treated with airtight dressings such as bandages unless directed by a doctor.
- Inform your doctor if the treated skin area does not improve after 2 weeks of treatment.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the active substances, especially in those with a history of possible chlorhexidine-related allergic reactions.

Use in pregnancy

Use in lactation
[SAFE IF PRESCRIBED] Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride + Nystatin is safe to use during breastfeeding. The baby's skin should not come into direct contact with the treated area of skin. Water-miscible cream/gel is preferred.
Pediatric use
Pediatric Dose: Apply 2-3 times a day, continuing for 7 days after lesions have healed, or as directed by the physician.
Geriatric use
Limited information is available regarding dose adjustment for elderly patients.
Renal / hepatic impairment
For topical use, no dose adjustment is required in renal or hepatic impairment.
Overdose effects
Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. In the event of accidental oral ingestion, routine measures such as gastric lavage should be performed as soon as possible after ingestion.
