Degarelix

Degarelix is used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. It works by lowering the amount of testosterone produced in the body and restricts the growth of a cancer cell. Degarelix is given as an injection under the skin only under the supervision of a doctor. Do not try to self inject the medicine as it might enhance the chances of an accident or get injected into the veins. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you. The most common side effects of this medicine include Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness), weight gain, hot flashes, increased liver enzyme, and low sexual desire. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. If you notice dizziness or trouble sleeping, then better to avoid driving or machinery work. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart disease, or diabetes or liver disease. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor may check for prostate specific antigen (PSA) level in your blood, to know treatment is working or not. Degarelix lowers the amount of testosterone (a male hormone) produced by the body. This may slow or stop the spread and growth of prostate cancer cells that need testosterone to grow.

Degarelix, a synthetic decapeptide, reversibly and competitively binds to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors in the anterior pituitary gland, thereby decreasing secretion of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and subsequently reducing testicular androgen synthesis.

Adult Dose: Subcutaneous Advanced prostate cancer Adult: Loading dose: As 40 mg/mL solution: 240 mg (given as 2 separate injections of 120 mg). Maintenance: As 20 mg/mL solution: 80 mg once every 28 days, starting 28 days after the initial dose. Doses are administered in the abdominal area. Hepatic Impairment Mild-to-moderate: Dose adjustment not necessary Severe: Safety and efficacy not established; use caution Renal Dose: Renal Impairment >50 mL/min: Dose adjustment not necessary <50 mL/min: Use caution

[UNSAFE] Degarelix may decrease alertness, affect your vision or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur. Degarelix helps in the treatment of advanced hormone-dependent prostate cancer. It is give by injection under the skin (subcutaneously), usually in the stomach area. It may cause dizziness and blurred vision. Do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how it affects you. It may cause hot flashes. Try wearing loose clothing and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. Inform your doctor if you are diabetic or have problems with your heart, kidney or liver. Your doctor may check the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. This is done to monitor how well Degarelix is working for you. A decrease in PSA levels is usually a sign that your treatment is working.

Increased risk of QT prolongation with class IA (e.g. disopyramide) or class III (e.g. amiodarone) antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, methadone and moxifloxacin.

[UNSAFE] Degarelix is highly unsafe to use during pregnancy. Seek your doctor's advice as studies on pregnant women and animals have shown significant harmful effects to the developing baby.

Regular monitoring of testosterone levels is advised.

I have problem of frequent urination at night. My father had same at his time.Doctor told me that I am having BPH.Also I went through PSA whose result is 1.8 increased prostate gland size is 40 which came in ultrasound report .When doctor did some test by inserting his finger in my rectal area I felt abnormal pain.doctor asked me to go for a culture test so as to check which can be the best medicine for BPH for me.
