Dexamethasone + Moxifloxacin is an eye drop used for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It stops the growth of bacteria and helps in relieving redness, itching and swelling.
Description
Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic which prevents bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, thereby killing the bacteria. Dexamethasone is a steroid which blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that make the eye red, swollen and itchy.

Pharmacology
Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid which decreases inflammation by inhibiting the migration of leukocytes and reversal of increased capillary permeability. Moxifloxacin inhibits topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination.
Mechanism of action
Moxifloxacin kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV; Dexamethasone reduces inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2.
Dosage
Adult: 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac(s) every 4 to 6 hours. During the initial 24 to 48 hours, may increase to 1-2 drops every two hours.
Administration
For external use only. Wash hands, hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it, place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.
Side effects
Common: Eye irritation, eye discomfort.
Precautions & warnings
May affect driving ability (dizziness, vision changes, muscle weakness). Do not touch the tip to any surface. Do not wear contact lenses. Inform doctor if no improvement after 7 days. Use within 4 weeks of opening.
Contraindications
Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, other viral diseases of conjunctiva and cornea; mycobacterial infection of the eye; fungal diseases of ocular structures; hypersensitivity to any component.

Use in pregnancy
Pregnancy Category C. Dexamethasone + Moxifloxacin may be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby.
