Pharmacology
Docosanol exerts its antiviral effect on HSV by inhibiting fusion of the virus envelope with host cell plasma membranes, resulting in inhibition of viral entry into cells and subsequent viral replication.
Mechanism of action
Docosanol prevents HSV from entering cells, thereby inhibiting viral replication.
Dosage
Adult: Apply topically to cover all lesions 5 times daily; rub gently but completely.
Child (<12 years): Safety & efficacy not established.
Administration
Wash hands before using. Apply sufficient quantity to cover the affected lesions and immediately surrounding skin until healed.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose.
Side effects
Common (1-10%): Headache, application site reaction (e.g., burning, stinging).
Precautions & warnings
Do not share this product with anyone (may spread infection). Stop using if cold sore worsens or is not healed within 10 days. Not recommended for children younger than 12 years.
