Pharmacology

Iron is essential for hemoglobin formation and effective erythropoiesis. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and erythropoiesis. Zinc is a cofactor in over 100 enzymes and plays a role in DNA synthesis. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair and acts as an antioxidant.

Mechanism of action

Iron is essential for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and erythropoiesis. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption and acts as an antioxidant. Zinc is an enzyme cofactor and supports immune system.

Dosage

Adult Dose: One tablet daily. In more severe cases, 2 tablets a day may be required.

Administration

Oral tablet. For maximum absorption take on empty stomach, but may take with or after meals to minimize GI irritation.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule.

Precautions & warnings
  • Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload (hemochromatosis, thalassemia, haemosiderosis, hemolytic anemia).

Contraindications
  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
Drug interactions

Elemental iron: Antacids may decrease absorption. May reduce effects of penicillamine. Concurrent use with psychotropic drugs may worsen constipation.

Folic acid: Antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, anti-TB drugs, alcohol, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, trimethoprim may decrease serum folate concentrations. Decreases serum phenytoin concentrations.

Vitamin C: May interact with deferoxamine, hormonal contraceptives, warfarin, salicylates.
