Pharmacology
Iron is an essential component in the formation of hemoglobin; adequate amounts of iron are necessary for effective erythropoiesis. Folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis. Zinc is a cofactor in over 100 enzymes.
Mechanism of action
Iron helps in hemoglobin formation, folic acid helps in red blood cell formation, zinc supports immune system.
Dosage
Adult Dose: 1-2 capsules daily.
Elderly: 1 capsule daily (2 capsules in severe cases).
Child (Over 1 year): 1 capsule daily (capsule may be opened and pellets mixed with soft cool food, do not chew).
Administration
For maximum absorption take on empty stomach, but may take with or after meals to minimize GI irritation.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Dark stools (usual during iron therapy)
- Nausea
- Anorexia
- Vomiting
- Discomfort
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Allergic reactions (rare)
Precautions & warnings
Precautions:
- Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload (hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia or red cell aplasia).
- Iron and zinc chelate with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired.
- Absorption of iron may be impaired by penicillamine and antacids.
- In patients with renal failure, a risk of zinc accumulation could exist.

Drug interactions
Drug Interactions:
- Antacids/H2 antagonists: May reduce absorption of iron.
- Chloramphenicol: May delay response to iron.
- Levodopa, Methyldopa, Penicillamine: May reduce absorption.
- Quinolones or Tetracyclines: May reduce absorption.
Food interactions
Food Interactions: Caution is advised when consuming alcohol; consult your doctor.
Use in pregnancy
Use in Pregnancy: Avoid use during first trimester if possible; administration requires definite evidence of iron deficiency.
Pregnancy Category: A — always consult a doctor before taking during pregnancy.
Use in lactation
Use in Lactation: Zinc and iron supplementation may be needed during lactation; use under medical advice.
Pediatric use

Renal / hepatic impairment

Overdose effects
Overdose: Iron overdosage is dangerous, especially in children; gastric lavage and desferrioxamine; zinc sulfate overdose is corrosive.

Storage: Protected from light and moisture, store below 30 degree C. Keep out of reach of children.
