Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep

Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep is an antifungal medication which treats eye infections. It works by killing the fungi in the eye by destroying their cell membrane. This relieves discomfort, itching and irritation in the eye.

Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It is a triazole antifungal agent that is a potent inhibitor of fungal cytochrome P-450 dependent enzymes.

Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal agent. It is a potent inhibitor of fungal cytochrome P-450 dependent enzymes. Cytochrome P-450 enzyme system is essential component of fungal cell membrane which is responsible for the synthesis of ergosterol.

Fluconazole decreases ergosterol synthesis by interfering with cytochrome P450 activity, thus inhibiting cell membrane formation of susceptible fungi.

Adult Dose (Topical):

• 1-2 drops to be instilled into the affected eye 5 times daily.

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

If you miss a dose of Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep, take it as soon as possible; however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Common Side Effects:

• Eye irritation
• Stinging in the eyes

Precautions:

• Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep may cause dizziness or seizures which may affect driving ability.
• Prescribed to treat fungal infections of the eye.
• Do not skip doses and finish the full course of treatment.
• Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop.
• Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye.
• Stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 mins; notify doctor if it persists longer.
• If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before putting in these eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting lenses back in.
• Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to azoles.

Drug Interactions:

• Oral hypoglycemics, phenytoin, theophylline, rifabutin: May increase plasma concentrations (systemic absorption is minimal, but caution required).

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep is unsafe during pregnancy; definite evidence of risk to the developing baby; doctor may prescribe in life-threatening situations.

Use in Lactation: Fluconazole 0.3% Eye prep is safe during breastfeeding; does not pass into breastmilk in significant amount and is not harmful to the baby.

Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy not established; use under medical advice.

Geriatric Use: No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.

Renal Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Hepatic Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Overdose: Limited information on topical overdose; excessive use may cause eye irritation.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
