Framycetin sulfate Eye prep

Introduction: Framycetin sulfate Eye prep is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye (e.g. conjunctivitis) and the eyelids (e.g. blepharitis). It may also help to prevent an infection after an eye injury or surgery.

How it works: Framycetin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions.

Important Information: It should be used regularly and the full course of treatment should be completed. It may cause short-term blurring of vision after use, so do not drive. Contact lenses should not be worn.

Aminoglycoside antibiotic

Framycetin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which is the major component of neomycin. Susceptible organisms include many gram-negative bacteria (but not Pseudomonas) and many strains of Staphylococcus. Used topically in the treatment of skin, eye and ear infections often in combination with steroids and other antimicrobials.

Framycetin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth and reproduction, leading to control of infection.

Adult Dose:

• Apply 1 drop 2-3 times daily into the affected eyes.

For external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

If you miss a dose, please consult your doctor.

Common Side Effects:

• Burning sensation at application site
• Irritation
• Itching
• Redness

Precautions:

• Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment.
• Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop.
• Do not touch the tip to any surface, or to your eye, to avoid contamination.
• Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before delivering the next medication in the same eye.
• It may cause short term blurring of vision when first used - use caution before driving.
• Make sure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Contraindications:

• Known allergy to lanolin or framycetin
• Fungal/viral or resistant bacterial eye infections

Drug Interactions:

• Co-administration of gramicidin with framycetin reduces the risk of selecting resistant bacteria.

Food Interactions: No interaction found/established.

Use in Pregnancy: May be unsafe during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks.

Use in Lactation: Should be used with caution during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should be held until the treatment is completed and the drug is eliminated from the body.

Pediatric Use: Use as per doctor's advice for children.

Geriatric Use: Use as per doctor's advice for elderly patients.

Renal & Hepatic Impairment: No interaction found/established (minimal systemic absorption due to topical use).

Overdose: Overdose is unlikely when used as directed. Excessive use may cause eye irritation.

Storage: Store below 25°C, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
