Guaifenesin+Dextromethorphan+Menthol

Introduction: Guaifenesin + Dextromethorphan + Menthol is a combination syrup used for chest congestion, cough and sore throat.

How it works: Guaifenesin is an expectorant that loosens congestion in the chest and throat, making it easier to cough out. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide is a cough suppressant that affects signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex. Menthol has local anesthetic and counter irritant qualities and is widely used to relieve throat irritation.

Important Information: Adults and children over 12 years: 2 teaspoonfuls (10 ml) every 6 hours. Maximum 8 teaspoonfuls (40 ml)/day. Do not use for children under 12 years.

Menthol is an organic compound made synthetically or obtained from corn mint, peppermint or other mint oils. It has local anesthetic and counter irritant qualities and is widely used to relieve throat irritation.

Guaifenesin thins mucus, Dextromethorphan suppresses cough reflex and Menthol soothes throat irritation.

Adults and children over 12 years:

• 2 teaspoonfuls (10 ml) every 6 hours

Oral syrup. Can be taken with or without food. Take in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule.

Common Side Effects:

• Dizziness

• Gastrointestinal disturbance
• Nervousness
• Restlessness
• Anxiety
• Irritability

Precautions:

• Consult doctor before use if you have asthma, chronic lung disease, shortness of breath, persistent cough or taking MAO inhibitor drugs
• Caution while driving or operating machinery
• Avoid alcohol

Contraindications:

• Currently taking MAOI or within 2 weeks of stopping MAOI

Drug Interactions:

• Possible systemic reactions with acetaminophen, hydrocodone, diphenhydramine, escitalopram, codeine, alprazolam & ondansetron

Food Interactions:

• Caution with alcohol consumption

Use in Pregnancy: Pregnancy Category C. Use only when benefit outweighs risk.

Use in Lactation: Unknown if dextromethorphan and guaifenesin are excreted in human milk. Use with caution.

Pediatric Use: Do not use for children under 12 years.

Geriatric Use: Use as per doctor's advice for elderly patients.

Renal & Hepatic Impairment: No known restrictions. However, consult your doctor.

Overdose: Guaifenesin overdose is unlikely to produce toxic effect. Dextromethorphan overdose may cause excitement, mental confusion and respiratory depression at very high doses. Menthol in large amounts may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a cool and dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
