Description

This ointment is used for the comprehensive symptomatic treatment of internal and external hemorrhoids and pruritus ani. It contains Hydrocortisone Acetate (anti-inflammatory), Benzyl Benzoate (mild antiseptic and preservative), Bismuth Subgallate and Bismuth Oxide (protective and mild astringent on mucous membranes), Balsam Peru (protective and mild antiseptic) and Zinc Oxide (protective and astringent).

Pharmacology

This ointment provides antiseptic, astringent, emollient and anti-inflammatory actions. Bismuth oxide, zinc oxide, and bismuth subgallate exert a protective action on mucous membranes, are mildly astringent and have antiseptic properties. Balsam Peru has protective properties and mild antiseptic action by virtue of its content of cinnamic and benzoic acids. It is believed to promote the growth of epithelial cells. Hydrocortisone acetate has anti-inflammatory action.

Mechanism of action

Hydrocortisone acetate reduces inflammation; Bismuth and Zinc compounds provide protective barrier; Balsam Peru promotes wound healing and provides antiseptic action.

Dosage

Adult Dose (18+ years):

  • Apply sparingly to affected area at night, in the morning and after each evacuation (max 4 applications/day)
  • Thoroughly cleanse affected area, dry and apply ointment on gauze dressing
  • For internal conditions use the rectal applicator provided
  • Use for a maximum period of one week

Pediatric Use: Not recommended for children under 18 years old

Administration

For topical use only; cleanse and dry affected area; apply at night, morning and after each evacuation; use rectal applicator for internal use.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible; if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose.

Side effects

Side Effects:

  • Prolonged or excessive use may produce systemic corticosteroid effects (max 7 days)
  • Sensitivity reactions (rare)
  • Transient burning on application (especially if anoderm is not intact)

Precautions:

  • Possibility of systemic absorption of topical steroids should be borne in mind
  • Prolonged or excessive use may produce systemic corticosteroid effects (not recommended for more than 7 days)
  • Discontinue and consult doctor if symptoms do not improve or worsen or if rectal bleeding occurs
Contraindications

Contraindications:

  • Tubercular, fungal and most viral lesions (including herpes simplex, vaccinia and varicella)
  • History of sensitivity to any constituents
Drug interactions

Concurrent use with other corticosteroid preparations either topically or orally may increase the likelihood of systemic effects.
