Description
Hylan G-F 20 is an elastoviscous high molecular weight fluid containing hylan A and hylan B polymers produced from chicken combs. It is a derivative of hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) that is chemically crosslinked. It helps restore the shock-absorbing quality of synovial fluid in knee osteoarthritis patients, reducing pain and enabling a more active lifestyle.

Pharmacology
Hylan G-F 20 is an elastoviscous fluid that is a chemically crosslinked derivative of hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) produced from chicken combs. In patients with knee osteoarthritis, it helps restore the shock-absorbing quality of synovial fluid, reducing pain and enabling a more active lifestyle.
Mechanism of action
Restores the shock-absorbing quality of synovial fluid in the knee and acts as a lubricant to reduce pain.
Dosage
Adult Dose (Intra-articular):
- One injection once a week (one week apart) for a total of three injections
- Remove synovial fluid or effusion before each injection
- Use an 18- to 22-gauge needle
- Do not use the same syringe for removing fluid and for injecting; same needle can be used
Pediatric Dose: Safety and effectiveness have not been established (pediatric patients ≤21 years)
Administration
Administered only under doctor supervision as intra-articular injection; strict aseptic technique must be followed; remove synovial fluid or effusion before each injection; twist tip cap before pulling off; secure needle tightly while holding luer hub.

Precautions:
- Effectiveness of less than three injections has not been established
- Safety and effectiveness in locations other than the knee and for conditions other than osteoarthritis have not been established
- Safety and effectiveness with other intra-articular injectables not established
- Caution in patients allergic to avian proteins, feathers, and egg products
- Safety and effectiveness in severely inflamed knee joints not established
- Caution with evidence of lymphatic or venous stasis in the leg
- Do not use disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts for skin preparation

- Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) preparations
- Knee joint infections
- Skin diseases or infections in the area of the injection site
