Description

Hyoscine Butyl Bromide is an anticholinergic medication that relaxes the muscles in the stomach and intestine. It stops sudden muscle contractions (spasms), relieving cramps, pain, bloating and discomfort. It is indicated for visceral spasms in the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract, spasmodic dysmenorrhea (painful periods), and acute renal or biliary colic.

Pharmacology

Hyoscine Butylbromide is an anticholinergic drug with an antispasmodic action on the smooth muscles of various organs. It competitively blocks muscarinic receptors and has central and peripheral actions. It relaxes smooth muscle and reduces gastric and intestinal motility.

Mechanism of action

Relaxes smooth muscle by blocking muscarinic receptors and relieves spasms in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 20 mg 4 times daily
  • Spasmodic dysmenorrhea: Start at least 2 days before menstruation and continue up to 3 days after period starts

Adult Dose (Parenteral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 20 mg IM/IV, repeat after 30 min if needed; Max: 100 mg daily

Child Dose (6-12 years, Oral):

  • Gastrointestinal & Genitourinary spasm: 10 mg 3 times daily
Administration

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine; do not self administer. Oral tablets may be taken with or without food. Injection is given IM or IV. During endoscopy, more frequent doses may be needed.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible; if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to regular schedule; do not double the dose.

Side effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Blurred vision
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Dilatation of pupil

Others: Dry skin, flushing, bradycardia followed by tachycardia and arrhythmia, fatigue, vomiting, dizziness, staggering

Precautions & warnings

Precautions:

  • Hyoscine Butyl Bromide may decrease alertness and affect vision; do not drive if these symptoms occur
  • Avoid alcohol (may increase drowsiness)
  • Inform doctor if you have heart problems, thyroid problems, fever, constipation or difficulty urinating
  • Caution in prostatic enlargement (BPH); caution in elderly patients
  • Concurrent use with other anticholinergic drugs may enhance effect
Contraindications

Contraindications:

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Acute haemorrhage
  • Paralytic ileus
  • Tachycardia due to cardiac insufficiency
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Pyloric stenosis
Drug interactions

Drug Interactions:

  • Additive sedative effects with alcohol or other CNS depressants
  • Effect potentiated by other anticholinergic drugs and TCAs
  • Reduced effects with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, tacrine)
Food interactions

Food Interactions: Hyoscine Butyl Bromide may cause excessive drowsiness with alcohol.

Use in pregnancy

Use in Pregnancy: Caution during first trimester; animal studies have shown harmful effects; doctor will weigh benefits and risks.

Use in lactation

Use in Lactation: Safe during breastfeeding; does not pass into breastmilk in significant amount; single dose unlikely to interfere with breastfeeding, but milk secretion may decrease during long-term use.

Pediatric use

Pediatric Use: 6-12 years: 10 mg 3 times daily; no data for children under 6 years.

Geriatric use

Geriatric Use: Caution due to prostatic enlargement; dose adjustment may be needed.

Renal / hepatic impairment

Renal Impairment: Caution in kidney disease; dose adjustment may be needed.

Hepatic Impairment: Caution in liver disease; dose adjustment may be needed.

Overdose effects
