Latanoprost 0.005% Eye Prep is used to reduce pressure in the eyes in people with glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It increases the outflow of aqueous humor to lower intraocular pressure (IOP).
Description
Latanoprost is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2α that reduces IOP by increasing the uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor. It is a prostanoid selective FP receptor agonist. Elevated IOP is a major risk factor for glaucomatous field loss; the higher the IOP, the greater the likelihood of optic nerve damage and visual field loss.

Pharmacology
Latanoprost is a prostanoid selective FP receptor agonist that reduces IOP by increasing uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor.
Mechanism of action
Increases outflow of aqueous humor to reduce intraocular pressure.
Dosage
Adult Dose:
- 1 drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening
Administration
- For ophthalmic use only
- Wash hands before use
- Hold dropper close to the eye without touching it; place drop in the lower eyelid
- Wipe off extra liquid
- Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute after instillation
- Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert after 15 minutes
Missed dose
Not generally applicable (regular daily use); consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Common Side Effects (5-15% of patients):
- Burning and stinging in the eye
- Conjunctival hyperemia
- Eye itching
- Eye pain
- Eyelash changes (increased length, thickness, number)
- Foreign body sensation
- Iris pigmentation change (permanent)
- Punctate epithelial keratopathy
Precautions & warnings
- Gradual increase in iris pigmentation may occur (permanent change)
- Eyelash and eyelid skin darkening may occur (reversible)
- Iris color change may take several months to years
- Caution with history of intraocular inflammation (iritis/uveitis)
- Caution with risk factors for macular edema
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to latanoprost, benzalkonium chloride, or any other ingredients
Drug interactions
- Precipitation with thimerosal-containing eye drops; allow 5 minutes interval
- Paradoxical IOP elevation with other prostaglandins
