Description

Magaldrate is a hydroxymagnesium aluminate complex that is rapidly converted in gastric acid to Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3, which are poorly absorbed and provide a sustained antacid effect. Simethicone is an antifoaming medicine that disintegrates gas bubbles to relieve flatulence.

  • Dyspepsia, heartburn, acid indigestion

  • Hyperacidity associated with peptic ulcers, gastritis and esophagitis

Pharmacology

Magaldrate rapidly neutralizes gastric acid without raising pH above 5-6 and decreases pepsin activity. Simethicone enables gas bubbles to coalesce and provides relief from flatulence.

Dosage

Adult Dose (Oral):

  • Suspension: 2-4 teaspoonfuls (10-20 mL), 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, 3-4 times daily
  • Tablet: 1-4 chewable tablets, 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime

Children (12 years+): Adult dose

Administration
  • Chew tablets; shake suspension well before use
  • Measure with a measuring cup and take by mouth
  • Take 20-60 minutes after meals
Missed dose

Not generally applicable; consult doctor if needed.

  • Chalky taste

Precautions & warnings
  • Caution in decreased kidney function, hypophosphataemia, and weak people
  • Inform doctor if signs of appendicitis (lower abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting) occur
  • Take at least 2 hours before or after other medicines
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to magnesium and aluminium
  • Impaired renal function
Drug interactions
  • Do not use with tetracyclines
  • May cause reduced bioavailability or slower absorption of propranolol, isoniazid, prednisolone, and naproxen
Food interactions

Alcohol consumption with Magaldrate + Simethicone is unsafe.
