Description
Magaldrate is a hydroxymagnesium aluminate complex that is rapidly converted in gastric acid to Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3, which are poorly absorbed and provide a sustained antacid effect. Simethicone is an antifoaming medicine that disintegrates gas bubbles to relieve flatulence.
Indications
- Dyspepsia, heartburn, acid indigestion
- Gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia
- Hyperacidity associated with peptic ulcers, gastritis and esophagitis
- Flatulence, abdominal distension and windy colic

Pharmacology
Magaldrate rapidly neutralizes gastric acid without raising pH above 5-6 and decreases pepsin activity. Simethicone enables gas bubbles to coalesce and provides relief from flatulence.

Dosage
Adult Dose (Oral):
- 1-3 chewable tablets, 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, 3-4 times daily
Children (12 years+): 1-3 chewable tablets, 20-60 minutes after meals and at bedtime
Administration
- Chew tablets thoroughly
- Take 20-60 minutes after meals
Missed dose
Not generally applicable; consult doctor if needed.
Side effects
Common Side Effects:
- Chalky taste
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
Precautions & warnings
- Caution in decreased kidney function, hypophosphataemia, and weak people
- Inform doctor if signs of appendicitis (lower abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting) occur
- Take at least 2 hours before or after other medicines
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to magnesium and aluminium
- Impaired renal function
Drug interactions
- Do not use with tetracyclines
- May cause reduced bioavailability or slower absorption of propranolol, isoniazid, prednisolone, and naproxen
Food interactions
Alcohol consumption with Magaldrate + Simethicone Chewable is unsafe.
